The Central South is full of talented creative people.
Designers. Filmmakers. Developers. Artists. Architects. Marketers. Technologists. Founders. Freelancers. Studios.
The challenge is not a lack of talent.
It is making sure those people find each other.
That is why Southern Creative Catalyst events are built around two simple ideas: MEET and MAKE.
They are different kinds of events, but they share the same aim: to connect people, create opportunities and strengthen the creative economy across the Central South.
MEET events are exactly what they sound like.
Relaxed, informal gatherings for people working in, around or simply curious about the creative and creative technology economy.
There is little or no agenda.
No endless presentations.
No pressure to pitch.
Instead, we create the space for people to talk.
To make introductions.
To discover what other people are working on.
To meet a future collaborator, client, supplier, employer or friend.
At our Portsmouth MEET at the University of Portsmouth’s Centre for Creative and Immersive Extended Reality, the focus was on conversation and relationship-building across creative disciplines. It brought people together in a setting where new technology, creative work and new connections could sit side by side.
That is the point of MEET.
The creative economy grows through relationships.
Sometimes the most valuable thing to come from an event is not something that happens on the night. It is the conversation that continues the following week.
The introduction that becomes a project.
The person you call when an opportunity appears.
The idea that would not have happened if two people had never been in the same room.
MAKE has a different energy.
These are fast-paced, creative show-and-tell events for people working at the intersection of technology, art and the creative economy.
Artists, technologists, designers, developers, creative businesses and students share what they are building, testing or exploring.
The work does not have to be finished.
Slides are optional.
Demos are encouraged.
Half-formed ideas are welcome.
At our Winchester MAKE, people were invited to share work in progress and explore what is happening right now across creative technology. The format is deliberately open to people with curiosity, not just those with polished projects or perfect answers.
That matters.
Too much good work stays hidden until somebody decides it is finished.
MAKE gives people permission to share earlier.
To test an idea.
To find useful feedback.
To discover somebody with a missing skill.
To inspire someone else.
And sometimes simply to say: this is what I am making.
Strong creative regions need more than networking.
And they need more than showcases.
They need places where relationships can form and places where ideas can be seen.
That is why we have MEET and MAKE.
MEET helps people find each other.
MAKE helps people see what is possible.
Together, they create more connection, more visibility and more opportunity.
They help freelancers feel less isolated.
They help businesses find collaborators.
They help students and emerging talent meet people already working in the industry.
They help creative businesses discover new technology, new thinking and new opportunities.
And they help us show the wider world just how much talent, ambition and creative work already exists across the Central South.
Our events happen across the region.
We do not believe the creative economy belongs to one city, one town or one organisation.
It exists in studios, spare rooms, universities, agencies, workshops, cultural spaces and businesses across the Central South.
That is why the Catalyst moves around.
Our wider events programme has included activity in places such as Portsmouth, Winchester, Farnborough, Basingstoke and Southampton, alongside events and collaborations with partners across the region.
Each place has its own people, strengths and ideas.
Our job is to help connect them.
The more those local creative communities know about each other, the stronger the whole region becomes.
These events are built for participation.
Come to a MEET and talk to someone new.
Come to a MAKE and show us what you are working on.
Bring a colleague.
Share an idea.
Make an introduction.
Offer a venue.
Suggest a speaker.
Help us bring an event to your part of the region.
The Catalyst is powered by people getting involved.
The aim is not simply to fill rooms.
It is to create the conditions for better relationships, stronger businesses, unexpected collaborations and new opportunities.
Because when creative people meet, things happen.
And when they start making together, a region becomes stronger.
Meet people. Share ideas. Make things happen.
See the events page for the latest MEETs, MAKEs and other opportunities to get involved.
